Principals, teachers and other school professionals (e.g. social workers) often have
information communicated to them in confidence by students.
Various professional codes of ethics provide guidance regarding confidentiality
matters for teachers, counsellors, social workers and psychologists, among others.
The issue of disclosure of information imparted in confidence is sensitive and complex.
If you are required to attend court for any reason, seek prior legal advice through your
supervisory officer from the board’s lawyer, and contact OPC for advice and assistance.
If you believe you may be asked to disclose confidential information by the court,
discuss this with the board lawyer and OPC in advance.
