I’m the new principal...

What do I do now?

The Handbook for School Leaders is designed primarily for new principals, but it is a useful resource for all principals, vice-principals and aspiring school administrators.

The Handbook does not separately describe principal and vice-principal responsibilities, elementary and secondary issues, nor management and leadership functions.

It is designed to be a hands-on, practical guide that is wide-ranging, but not exhaustive.

Please note that The Handbook is not legal advice. It is provincial in scope and is intended to be used with local school board guidelines. Principals and vice-principals, first and foremost, must follow their district school boards’ policies and procedures.

Throughout The Handbook, you will find summaries of relevant Ministry of Education documents and legislation, addresses of websites and references to specific Ontario Principals’ Council (OPC) resources (e.g. the Member Access section of the Ontario Principals’ Council website).
