Be sure to take these issues into consideration when working with your school council:

Membership

  • Recruiting, training and retaining school council members
  • Achieving meaningful diversity and representation on the school council.

Meetings

  • Frequency and duration
  • Arranging logistics of school council meetings (room, coffee, arrangement of furniture)
  • Running effective school council meetings
  • Scheduling regular meetings with the chair (e.g. once a month)
  • Working with the chair to prepare the agenda in advance of meetings.

Process

  • Developing strategies for setting goals and building consensus on the council
  • Giving personal invitations for school events to school council chair and the community representative
  • Planning staff presentations to the school council regarding such items as curriculum, student assessment
  • Finding a focus for the council.
