Be sure to take these issues into consideration when working with your school
council:
Membership
- Recruiting, training and retaining school council members
- Achieving meaningful diversity and representation on the school council.
Meetings
- Frequency and duration
- Arranging logistics of school council meetings (room, coffee, arrangement of
furniture)
- Running effective school council meetings
- Scheduling regular meetings with the chair (e.g. once a month)
- Working with the chair to prepare the agenda in advance of meetings.
Process
- Developing strategies for setting goals and building consensus on the council
- Giving personal invitations for school events to school council chair and the
community representative
- Planning staff presentations to the school council regarding such items as
curriculum, student assessment
- Finding a focus for the council.
