Anaphylaxis: Allergies and Emergency Medical Treatment Last Updated: 2012-06-15
    • Review the board’s policies and procedures regarding emergency medical treatment and allergies.
    • Ensure that the school plan for dealing with anaphylaxis follows board procedures and outlines both preventive and reactive strategies.
    • Check all collective agreements regarding the administration of student medication/Epi-pens by staff. Ensure on-site Epi-pens have not expired.
    • Keep Epi-pens close to students; older students may carry their own Epi-pens for easy access.
    • Insist that parents of anaphylactic students provide a current assessment of their child’s condition and a physician-prescribed plan.
    • Train staff to handle anaphylactic emergencies (e.g. in the use of Epi-pens).
  2. When developing/revising your school’s anaphylaxis plan, consider the elements noted in the six areas below.

      • sensitivity to parental concerns about the confidentiality of medical information
      • what the school is prepared to do to support an anaphylactic student
      • a process to inform all students, staff and parents of their respective responsibilities
      • a communications plan that outlines the board’s policy and points out that it is not possible to have a school environment that is completely allergen free.
      • a procedure for sharing specific medical details regarding individual students with all staff
      • a written emergency protocol form for each student with anaphylaxis, and a signed permission form for the emergency use of Epi-pens.
      • an emergency response plan that includes transporting the student to a hospital after administration of the Epinephrine.
      • a plan to deal with anaphylaxis occurring on the school bus, in lunchroom facilities, at social events where food is served, on field trips, at special seasonal activities, etc.
      • annual training of regular staff, occasional staff, older students and volunteers in the use of Epi-pens.
      • methods to minimize and control allergens such as those found in insect bites, nuts, commercially prepared foods and candy, art supplies, toys, mould, paint, carpets, etc.
      • a buddy system for students
      • a procedure for responding to teasing or bullying of anaphylactic students.
      • an annual review of the school’s preventive and reactive procedures regarding anaphylaxis
