Exercise due diligence by knowing your duties and take reasonable steps to protect
everyone:
- Communicate expectations to students and staff regularly and in a variety of ways (memos, handbooks, assemblies, announcements, etc.).
- Document follow-up on work/repair orders with relevant personnel.
- Document incidents according to established procedures.
- Health and Safety Inspection (report and follow up on recommendations).
- Identify hazards through daily observation and regular health and safety
inspections.
- Regularly review and implement board policies and procedures.
General factors a court may consider:
- adherence to accepted guidelines, e.g. Ontario Physical and Health Educators Association
- balance of risk with educational outcome or purpose
- competency and capacity of the students
- degree of skill and training of participants and supervisors in connection
with the activity
- nature and condition of the equipment in use
- nature of the exercise or activity
- number of students supervised at any given time.
