The Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act

The purposes of the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act are:

to provide a right of access to information under the control of institutions in accordance with the principles that,
1. information should be available to the public
2. necessary exemptions from the right of access should be limited and specific
3. decisions on the disclosure of government information should be reviewed independently of government; and
to protect the privacy of individuals with respect to personal information about themselves held by institutions and to provide individuals with a right of access to that information.

The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act is divided into five sections:
PART I: Administration
PART II: Freedom of Information
PART III: Protection of Individual Privacy
PART IV: Appeal
PART V: General.
