As the "captain of the ship," a principal can be called to account for his/her practice. It is critical to distinguish between a complaint and a finding. Principals routinely attract complaints because they are tasked with making complex decisions that are often unpopular with one or more affected party. Being the subject of a complaint does not automatically ruin your reputation, nor does it mean that the complaint is believed without verification. A principal faced with a complaint is entitled to procedural fairness throughout the investigation of the complaint. An OPC Member may request the assistance of the Protective Services Team of the OPC through the investigation. One event may be assessed by more than one body to which the principal is accountable. At the end of the investigation, a finding will determine what, if any, further steps are required.
