A school board is accountable before the Privacy Commission under the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA). Areas that attract complaints against boards due to a principal’s conduct include:
- Aged-based Rights and Laws – e.g. disclosing information to parents when student has withdrawn from parental control

- Custody and Access – e.g. disclosing information to a non-custodial parent (refer to chapter on Records and Information Management)
- Ontario Student Record (OSR) Materials – (refer to chapter on Records and Information Management). Additional specific rules apply to student information maintained in the OSR, refer to OSR Guideline 2000.
- Collection, use and disclosure of student information, e.g. blanket consents.
