Principals, teachers and boards owe a duty of care to their students, parents and
visitors: a duty to take reasonable steps to ensure the students’ (persons’) safety and
well-being (on or off premises), during official school hours and while engaged in
school related activities.
The standard of care expected is that which a reasonable person would exercise in
similar circumstances so as to avoid exposing others to an unreasonable risk or harm.
The higher the risk inherent in the activity, the higher degree of care required, (e.g.
recess play versus adventure education).
