The board has property insurance coverage for the school building and liability
insurance for potential issues related to staff, students and visitors.
It is the principal’s responsibility to inspect the building on a regular basis (per the
Education Act) and to report deterioration or safety matters.
Injury or threat of lawsuits should be communicated immediately to the appropriate
board departments to ensure proper coverage and response. Lawsuits can implicate
those indirectly responsible (principal, school board) as well as those perceived to be
