1. Equipment
Stock emergency kits for the main office and other key areas of the school as
required. The kit could include:
- battery operated bullhorn
- blankets
- cell phones
- class lists
- emergency phone numbers
- first aid kits (Epi-pens)
- iodine pills (if onsite)
- flashlights
- office supplies, etc.
- pagers or walkie-talkies
- radio with batteries
- portable defibrillators (if one onsite).
Ensure ready access to first aid supplies including non-latex gloves.
Here is an example of some of the information that may be included in an
emergency binder:
- a copy of the response plan and other important information
- a list of first aid qualified staff
- a list of students with special medical or mobility needs
- a master list of all students with severe allergies
- maps of the school indicating special areas, utility shut-offs and hazardous
materials
- maps and telephone numbers of off-site evacuation locations
- phone numbers for bus companies, municipal emergency services and board
security personnel
- the official fire plan
- WHMIS records.
Place copies of the binder in the main office, custodian’s office and other key areas
of the building.
2. Communication
- Establish signals for lockdowns, student/staff medical emergencies, bomb
threats and an all clear to return to the building.
- Have a map and telephone numbers of the off-site evacuation location(s) and
procedures for transporting students there and taking attendance upon arrival.
- Establish protocols with the other schools or community agencies for which
your school acts as an evacuation site.
