Dismissal of a teacher from employment must be accomplished by a resolution of the
board trustees and is generally enacted when the teacher’s behaviour (on or off duty)
is so refractory as to jeopardize the safety and well-being of students or colleagues,
or if their performance is demonstrably substandard over a period of observation,
despite the provision of support, assistance and time to improve.
Dismissal usually, but not always, follows upon a progressive series of disciplinary
measures against the teacher for inappropriate or unacceptable behaviour; it is rarely
the first course of action in such situations, but it can be. Other employees may also
face discipline up to and including dismissal for misconduct, in accordance with the
provisions of their collective agreements.
