There are times when you should not commit to doing a media interview:
- Don’t do an interview until your internal audiences (board, staff, parents, students) are informed about the issue. There’s no worse feeling than learning about a school issue from the news instead of your principal.
- Don’t respond to media questions on behalf of the school board. Refer those requests to your school board’s Communications department or to your Superintendent of Education.
- Interviews during labour negotiations or any other news blackout should be reviewed with your Superintendent of Education and/or Communications department first.
In the middle of a crisis, only conduct interviews when you have information to share and the safety of students and staff can be assured.
